Donegal’s defeat of reigning champions Dublin in the 2014 All-Ireland semi-final still stands as Jim McGuinness’s greatest tactical achievement. On Saturday night, in Derry city’s Bogside, he may very well need to better that effort to have any chance of success.

Billed as the first heavyweight clash of the 2024 championship, Donegal v Derry has the makings of a classic Ulster encounter. At a time when the GAA world is falling out of love and patience with its traditional provincial competitions, Saturday evening’s contest, in the inhospitable Celtic Park, aims to breathe some life back into the game.
