Interim Ulster Rugby chief executive Hugh McCaughey says he has no desire to shed the part-time tag — but has also insisted he is not just warming the seat for his successor at Ravenhill.

The former Southern Health Trust executive has taken over on a short-term basis in a bid to steady the ship after the departure of Jonny Petrie last month.

Ulster Rugby CEO doesn't want job on a permanent basis

But although the high-profile job will soon be up for grabs, McCaughey, who is determined to make an immediate impact, has ruled out any possibility of becoming full-time CEO.

“I’m focused on doing it for the next six months. My wife is scanning my head every month to make sure that (permanent) thought doesn’t enter!” he laughed.

“To get an opportunity like this, it’s quite liberating to do it for just six months. If I’m here for six months, I’m free to focus on hitting our short-term goals.

“This cannot be done on a basis of holding the reins. Ulster are in a position where we need to be moving forward, so we can’t afford to tread water, otherwise it will be a hell of a time.

“So I’ve taken the job on the basis as if I am doing it full-time. We have a lot to do.”
