Motivation is a mysterious thing. Sometimes it seems to strike us out of nowhere. On such days, we might spring out of bed and greet the day ahead with enthusiasm. Our chores get done, we rattle through our tasks with ease, and everything else — from social occasions to exercise — seem to slot in with uncharacteristic ease. Sadly, for most of us, these days don’t crop up as often as the kind where everything feels like a bit of an effort. This is especially true when it comes to work.

Of course, this is one reason why we need routine. It’s the scaffolding from which the rest of our life hangs. We might not want to get out of bed when the alarm goes off, but the combination of habit and responsibility empower us to be able to do so. But what really makes routine effective is the sense of purpose which enables us to commit to fulfilling our obligations. This is why, at its core, purpose is the key to unlocking motivation at work.
