Cookstown out to seal an instant return to EYHL’s top flight with Semi-Final win

Cookstown's Jack Haycock will be vital as the Reds look to seal promotion

Cookstown are looking to seal an immediate return to the EYHL when they take on Pembroke Wanderers in their EYHL2 Semi-Final on Saturday.

A win would be enough to seal their promotion and would also book their spot in Sunday’s Final in Cork.

The Reds have had a brilliant campaign, winning the Ulster Premier League as well as reaching the Semi-Final of the Irish Senior Cup and the Kirk Cup.

Now they are just one more win away from securing their place back in the top flight of local hockey.

However, the side have been out of action for two weeks with their last game coming against South Antrim on April 6.

That day, goals from Michael and Daniel Kerr as well as Scott McCabe sealed a 3-1 win.

The mid-Ulster side will also be relying on top scorer Jack Haycock to add to his 18 goals in the Premier League this season if they are to progress.

Pembroke come into the game having won five of their eight group games as well as progressing in last week’s Quarter-Final with a comfortable 4-2 win against Cork Church of Ireland.

Elsewhere, Belfast Harlequins take on Instonians in the Quarter-Final of the Anderson Cup.

The fixture sees the two sides meet for the second time in as many weeks following their recent Kirk Cup group stage fixture.

That day Premier League side Belfast Harlequins were able to pull off an upset as they won 3-1 away from home against their EYHL opposition.

Goals from Michael Patterson (2) and Matthew Gray sealed the win and they will look to repeat that result.

The result continues what has been a great season for the Deramore Park side as they finished third in the Men’s Premier League and recently progressed to the Semi-Finals of the Kirk Cup.

Meanwhile, it has been a disappointing campaign for Instonians who not only lost key man Tommy Orr to Banbridge but went on to be relegated from the EYHL without winning a game.

Defeat for the side would mark an end to their campaign while victory would set up a Semi-Final clash with EuroHockey Club Trophy I champions Lisnagarvey.
