Northern Ireland international Paddy McNair has confirmed he will be leaving Middlesbrough this summer, with Glasgow giants Rangers linked with a move for the versatile 29 year-old.

With McNair’s contract with Boro set to expire next month, the Ballyclare man took to Instagram to confirm his intention to leave the EFL Championship club after a six-year stint on Teeside.

In a post on Instagram, McNair said: “After six years and 219 appearances, my time (at Middlesbrough) has come to an end. Big thank you to all of the players, staff and the fans for the support throughout the years. Looking forward to the next chapter.”

McNair joined Boro from North-East neighbours Sunderland in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £5m.

He was named the club’s Player of the Year in 2020/21 season, but has made just 25 appearances this season with injuries hampering his progress. He played 219 games in total for Boro.

The former Manchester United man has been linked with a move to Ibrox, although Robbie Keane’s Maccabi Tel Aviv and Italian side Como.

However, a move to Glasgow is likely to appeal to McNair who is a boyhood Rangers fan.

McNair is expected to be available for Northern Ireland’s friendly double-header in Spain next month.

Michael O’Neill’s men are set to play the Spanish national team in Palma on Saturday June 8 before facing Andorra in Murcia on Tuesday June 11.

McNair, who made his international debut as a teenager in 2015, has won 67 caps for his country, scoring six goals.
