Andy Farrell is right not to pick Ulster players, says legend Willie John McBride

Willie John McBride says Ulster stars must prove their worth

British Lions legend Willie John McBride believes Ulster cannot complain about their lack of representation in the Ireland squad while the national side keeps winning.

Part of Ulster’s turmoil on and off the pitch has seen their number of internationals dwindle, with only Iain Henderson, Stuart McCloskey and Tom O’Toole featuring in the recent Six Nations, with no Ulster players involved in two of Ireland’s games as they defended their title.

And McBride has expressed his support for Andy Farrell and the work he has been doing, and believes it is up to Ulster’s players to prove him wrong rather than for the head coach to bring them in.

“I’ve been very pleased with Ireland in recent years. They have the right attitude, some really talented players, and their commitment has been absolutely tremendous,” said McBride.

“Farrell has been a tremendous influence and his selections have been very good, he has the right balance in his team all the time, whether it’s attack or defence. But he’s been proven right (by leaving out Ulster players).

"If they’re winning, what do you want him to do? If he keeps winning then how can you argue?”
