It was either going to happen early or it wasn’t going to happen at all. At 10.45am yesterday, Rory McIlroy made his way to the putting green behind the first tee box at Augusta National.
Maybe 45 minutes later, the verdict was in. It would not, in fact, be happening. There would be no green jacket, no grand slam. Not this year, at least.
