‘A lot of things wrong’: Declan Devine lays out brutal assessment of Glentoran as season ended by Coleraine

Glentoran manager Declan Devine has laid out a brutal assessment of his side after their dismal season was ended in similar fashion by Coleraine in their European Play-Off Semi-Final on Wednesday night.

A forgettable season came to a forgettable end as Jamie McGonigle’s double, and a further strike from Lyndon Kane, secured a 3-0 win over the Bannsiders at the BetMcLean Oval and a place in the Final against Crusaders.

It was another night where the Glentoran fanbase also did not make any secret of their feelings, loudly jeering the team off at both half- and full-time – or at least those who stayed, as the supporters made their way to the exits very early in the second half.

Devine, who took over on an interim basis after the sacking of Warren Feeney and was handed the job on a permanent basis shortly before the season ended, has not held back in the past about the job at hand.

And once again he was scathing in his assessment of his team’s performance on Wednesday night which, besides one header from Junior, saw them rarely threaten Rory Brown’s goal.

Now Devine will take the summer to re-stock his squad, and the manager knows he has a significant task on his hands to restore the club’s reputation with a disillusioned fanbase.

"Shocking. Terrible,” was his immediate assessment.

"A lot of things wrong and it needs fixed. I’ve known since I came here that there’s a lot of things wrong on the playing side of things.

"Zero identity for the people of east Belfast, the Glentoran fans who are paying to get in.

"Really disappointed. Not surprised but really disappointed.”
