A man in his 60s has died following a one-vehicle crash on the main A2 Belfast to Bangor Road, police have confirmed.

The crash, close to the Ulster Folk Museum in Cultra, outside Holywood and involving a black Hyundai i30, was reported to police shortly after 2pm on Thursday afternoon.

The PSNI attended the incident alongside the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, Air Ambulance and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Inspector Adair of the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “A man aged in his 60s, the driver of the Hyundai, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The A2 Bangor to Belfast dual carriageway was closed for a number of hours but has since re-opened.

“An investigation is ongoing and officers would ask anyone with any information, or who may have dash-cam or mobile phone footage available, to get in contact with them at the Collision Investigation Unit in Sprucefield on 101, quoting reference number 994 09/05/24.”

Earlier NIAS said no patients had been taken from the scene.

"The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call following reports of a single vehicle RTC on A2 near Holywood,” said a spokesperson.

“NIAS despatched a Rapid Response Paramedic and an Emergency Crew to the incident. The Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS crew on board was also tasked to attend by ambulance control.

“No patients were taken from the scene to hospital.”

Police have confirmed the road has now fully reopened to traffic.

North Down DUP MLA Stephen Dunne expressed his sadness at the news.

“This is a real tragedy and I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the gentleman who has sadly lost his life,” he said.

“The A2 Belfast to Bangor Dual Carriageway is a very busy section of road with over 35,000 daily vehicle movements, and this tragic news is a reminder to us all of the dangers on our roads.

“An investigation is ongoing, and I would encourage anyone with any information to contact the PSNI immediately to assist with their enquires.”
